Chrome Hoof - Pre-Emptive False Rapture
So Cathedral bassist Leo Smee and his brother Milo wanted to express their love for seventies funk and disco music. So they started this band called Chrome Hoof. Prepare for another addition to the world of weird (rock) music.
Pffff, it's hard to describe Chrome Hoof. The only band that came to mind when listening to them is Mr. Bungle, and that should give you an indication of what to expect but it doesn't clarify anything about Pre-Emptive False Rapture. It's weird and funky, odd and rocking, fast and... danceable even, here and there.
According to the biography they have gathered more members in their band with every show, eventually leading up to the addition of a full horn and string section. Wow! Furthermore this orchestra performs in sci-fi outfits and puts up a show complete with choreographed dancers, actors taking vaudeville interludes and a twelve foot metallic ram dominating the dancefloor. I can't fucking wait to see this live.
I've had mixed feelings about this record. Sometimes it just sounded like an amateurs trying to be experimental, other times I was swinging along to their beats. Especially because I'm a bassist too the funky bass-lines really get to me. In the end I must say that there are songs that I like and songs that I find sort of meaningless. In my honest opinion I think that this band should have given it another six months before they recorded Pre-Emptive False Rapture. Perhaps that the post-emptive true rapture will be a better effort.
In this cacophonous, female-fronted, bizarre orchestra talent is very obviously present. But they need to channel all this creative energy to the right direction if you ask me. Yet it is a very entertaining release, be it one that probably no 'true' metalhead will like.
